Comparison steals away the happiness

How often do we see in social media that someone or the other that we know has bought a car or a bike? Few days ago a friend visited me in his new car. And in some other day, a junior got himself a bike and some other acquaintance had a wonderful trip to a foreign land. After knowing these how can I not feel anything? Why am I not getting vehicles like other people? Why am I not getting promotions like the way some of my other friends do? Should these question come to my mind?

A little reflection helped me realize one thing. Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala does not gives everyone as per their desires. If one comprehend, every one of us have something or the other. We have what everyone can see and admire or we have what is latent and may be more important and useful than the former – that could be free time, peace of mind, great mind to think about great ideas, huge potential to achieve excellence, etc.
But the moment we try to compare with others, it kills the joy of having things we earlier had. We should always be grateful of our situation. But make no mistake, one should always make an effort to achieve Ihsan (pursuit of excellence). Don't just "be," don't just get by, don't just pass. Be excellent, strive for perfection, be the best in the class.

When we see someone with the thing we desire, we could do either of the 2 things: 1) Pray to Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala to help us achieve that and make an effort for that or 2) lament that we are not blessed with that. And any God conscious and smart person would take the first choice.
